Handegg ****
Handegg in the 1980’s was THE SCENE. Swiss sport climbing pioneers were returning after extended stays engrained in legendary Yosemite, California’s free climbing ethic. The smooth clean granite at Handegg was waiting for them to open up lines like “Fair Hands Line” (1978) or “Boulder Highway” (1979). To somewhat cushion the consequences of long falls down the slabs, knee protectors became essential personal protective equipment. In the days of climbing gyms, trips to the slabs have lessened considerabley. But for those adamant about climbing these slick slabs, they will definitely walk away with either positive or negative memories. Besides pure slabbing, Handegg does have a few cracks and dihedrals. Often mornings the slabs can be a bit wet, once the sun comes out (usually around 1100 (11am), the rock dries quickly.
