Mattsand ****

Amazingly, this very cool crag was not developed and climbed on until very recently. The wall is easily recognized from the car and the approach is more than casual. Most likely, the huge amount of cleaning necessary on this wall had delayed the climbing development. The mountain guides Thomi Zumtaugwald and Johann Williner took on the task in 2018 and started trundling the choss and drilling. They took advantage of the forced free time during the covid pandemic and finished up quite a few of the routes. The result of these efforts are some of the most beautiful and varied crags in the Matter Valley. The rock with cracks and slabs and crimpy edges is reminiscent of Ossola valley climbing. The routes demand proficiency in many different climbing styles. Expect summer time shade until 2pm.
